The Ace paperbacks can be had fairly inexpensively, for the most part, through used bookstores. I'm filling in my collection mainly through Abebooks.com: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?kn=Perry+Rhodan&sts=t. That works for about the first 115 or so. About 20 after that were published as pamphlets by subscription only. Luckily I still have all of them from 30+ years ago because my understanding is that they are quite a bit more expensive whenever they can even be found. There were a couple of false starts at getting some kind of translation program going again, but what few appeared are, for me, prohibitively expensive whenever I come across them. - KentKent G. Then I though to better first look and see what's available of PR in English and this is how I found your blog. So - there is some of the series being already translated into English, huh? I had heard that but never found anything. Not that I looked very deeply, though? I had started to read when the first printing was at the early 300s and - with some interruptions - read the series to the late 80s. A couple of attempts to get back into via electronic versions (too expensive to ship to the US) but that never worked out.
But back to the English booklets - is there a way to still get them somewhere?Merlin Silkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10414381050694938630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837445163018955689.post-8739275530226016232012-10-21T07:55:18.836-05:002012-10-21T07:55:18.836-05:00Looking over the numbering, I believe you're r...Looking over the numbering, I believe you're right. My email address is in my Google profile which you can get to by clicking the picture of me up to the right.

I remember even back when I was reading some of the US PR's back in the 1970s there were times the "previewed" title of an upcoming book didn't quite match what was ultimately published, but I'm too lazy right now to look up any examples; I'll try to notice some as I progress through the series. The obvious connotation for comics fans of the "Fantastic Four" is what caught my attention this time ... what's even funnier is when I just went to the Perrypedia summary for it, my Google Chrome automatic translator rendered the title "Die vier Unheimlichen" as "The Four Uncanny," which I obviously want to complete as ... "X-Men"! ... The reason I went and looked there was that I wondered if I miscopied the title, which you seem to render as "Vier von der USO" ... ?

Anyway, thanks for reading and offering your comments.

- KentKent G. I recently translated an article by Dr. Ranier Nagel out of Spurensuch im All concerning problems in translating the German into English. Dr. Nagel writes about the issue of choosing the right words, not only for a "true" translation, but also to maintain some entertaiment value. If you would like, I can send you copy, he has graciously given permission for it to be shared with others.

He talks a bit about how the quality of translations into English may have contributed to the serials problems in the USA, but attributes most of the problem to changes in attitude towards scifi.Kater Z. "Friedensstifter" : "Founder/Initiator of peace" would be the closest german equivalent i can think of from the top of my head.

As for the "onion-skin/layer-model": The last ACE-publications were an mixture of Atlan-series-novels and "Planetenromane" / "Planetary novels/romances". The last Master Publication was the german No. 145 "Phantom Horde": "Armee der Gespenster": "Army of Ghosts" of the Posbi-cycle.

And, yes. The concept was put into practice at least from the "Brain Odyssey": "Gehirnodyssee"/ "The Cosmic Chessmatch/Chessplay": "Das kosmische Schachspiel" from No. 600 onwards. But from "The Swarm": "Der Schwarm", starting in No. 500, onwards, the concept starts to materialise. The Swarm is a small galaxy. It´s length being 10.896 lightyears. It was built by several races under the direction of the Seven Mighty Ones to attack the milky way´s Superintelligence IT via adjusting the gravitational constant of our galaxy. Resulting in almost every human-equivalent race being dumbed down to feeble minded beings. I could go on further. But. The main point is. The Swarm marks the first metastructure intervention by other Superintelligences, their assisting peoples and their near-Superintelligence servants.

Tanja Michailovna is one of the earlyer mentioned mutants of the Overhead-Group who doesn´t appear later on. One of the "forgotten ones".

Cheers,
"Anonymous" :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837445163018955689.post-90958665817521735992012-10-10T10:46:52.347-05:002012-10-10T10:46:52.347-05:00Thanks, guys!

I looked it up! In the original she just asks:
"Sie betrachten sich als Weltpolizei?"
"You consider yourself the police force of the world?"
It's pretty clear from the context that she's referring to earth. “Peacelord of the Universe” would seem quite a stretch at this point.Tomnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837445163018955689.post-24385768067365431832012-10-09T21:50:19.975-05:002012-10-09T21:50:19.975-05:00The german subtitle "Der Erbe des Universums&...The german subtitle "Der Erbe des Universums" translates as "The Heir of the Universe / The Heir to the Universe / The Universe´s Heir". The term was initially coined as an cosmic/grandiose subtitle to attract readers. Later on in the series the story arc/script-supervising author William Voltz takes several sidestories and concepts to build an consistent cosmology. The "Zwiebelschalenmodell". The onion-skin-model of cosmic evolution. Each skin represents a higher level of evolution/intelligence. From the most primitive life up to such entities as the Chaotarchs and the Cosmocrats.
